Chapter Thirty-Five

I looked at Erik. “If I’m not back in ten minutes, call the police.”

He gave me a strange look, but nodded. I got up from the table and followed the stranger out of the bar and away from any people.

“You know this is a little creepy right? What do you want?”

“Evangeline isn’t who you think she is.”

“What are you talking about? Are you her husband or something, because I swear, I didn’t know she was married.”

“I’m not her husband and she’s not married.”

“Then what’s with the cloak and dagger shit? And who are you?”

“I’m here to warn you. You need to stay away from Evangeline. She’s dangerous.”

I looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “Sure she likes to drive fast but that doesn’t make her dangerous.”

The stranger looked like he was getting frustrated. “I can’t tell you more, but you need to believe me. She is a very dangerous creature and you need to stay as far away from her as possible. Your life depends on it.”

A noise behind me caught my attention. It was just a kid crying, but when I turned back around the stranger was gone. I spun around a few times, but it was like he just disappeared.

Shaking my head, I went back into the sports bar.

“What the hell was that all about?” Erik asked, as I sat next to him.

“I’m not completely sure. He warned me to stay away from Evangeline.”

“Who’s Evangeline?”

“The woman from the club. We hooked up again last night and I’m seeing her again tomorrow.”

“Why would he warn you to stay away from her?”

“No fucking clue. He said she was dangerous, and my life depended on me believing him. Weird right?”

“Extremely. Can’t you pick up a woman like a normal guy?

I snorted and took a drink. Ever since we’d known each other he always said I wasn’t a “normal” guy. Sure, I could go on less sleep than him, or eat my way through a buffet and never gain a pound, but that didn’t make me different. It was just good genetics, or so I assumed since I didn’t know who my birth parents were.

Our wings came and the entire time I was eating I kept thinking about the weirdo with the warning. Maybe he was an ex that wanted her back? But that would mean he would have to be stalking her to know about me. I didn’t notice anyone following me last night, but honestly, all I was thinking about was getting her naked again.

By the time we left, Erik had the number of our waitress and I was fully expecting him to have a date with her in the next couple of days. We decided to go to the market to grab some stuff to make dinner. Since I loved to eat, cooking came naturally to me and tonight I was in the mood for butter-poached fish, so I found what I needed, and we went back to our place.

“You know,” Erik said, when I put the last of the groceries away.
